          A crescut într-o familie ortodoxă fiind cel mai mic dintre cei cinci copii.

          A absolvit gimnaziul și liceul în orașul Făgăraș. A urmat cursurile Facultății de Teologie din Sibiu între 1970-1974 și la încheierea lor a susținut examenul de licență în 1974.

Printre profesorii care i-au marcat pregătirea teologică se regăsesc Olivier Clément, Boris Bobrinskoy și Konstantin Andronikoff. În 1985 a obținut titlul de doctor în teologie cu o lucrare despre tradiția românească a curentului isihast: "Roumanie - tradition et culture hésychastes".
