          Charles Albert Browning Jr.was born on July 12, 1880, in Louisville, Kentucky.

          As a child, he developed a passion for theatre and ran away from home at the age of 16 to join a traveling circus. Adopting the stage name "Tod Browning," he worked as a barker, clown, and performed a "living corpse" act, where he would be buried in a coffin for two days.
